Suzanne Paola (Susanne Antonetta) is the author of four books of poetry and two books of nonfiction, including Body Toxic: An Environmental Memoir, which was a 2001 New York Times Notable Book and won an American Book Award that same year. Her most recent book, A Mind Apart: Travels Through a Neurodiverse World, received the NAMI/Ken Johnson Award for achievement in handling the topic of mental illness. She lives in Bellingham, Washington.

Our 9-year-old emerged from a time-out in my bedroom dangling a sex toy called a ‘tongue vibrator’ from his finger. ‘I know what this is! I know what this is!’ he sang, doing a triumphant little jig while I nearly negated any use for the tongue vibrator by swallowing my own.
